A student-founded project · New York City

Helping the homeless,
one stitch at a time.

I make blankets for the homeless using reclaimed fabric.

Turning New York's discarded fabric into warmth and dignity.

Brycen Wassner

Stitch Street NYC started with a love for fashion and a curiosity to learn. Sophomore year I set out to create my own clothing line, but I kept noticing how much fabric was being thrown away, scraps that were still beautiful, still usable. Walking home from New York City's Garment District, I'd see people in my community out in the cold. That contrast stuck with me, so I started turning those scraps into blankets for the people who need warmth the most.

The process

From scraps to warmth

01
Sourcing fabric

Collect scraps from personal projects, community donations, and fabric stores that would otherwise be thrown out.

02
Learning what works

Soft, stretchy fabrics are ready right away. Tougher materials take testing to combine well.

03
Cutting & sewing

Each blanket is cut and stitched by hand, with stronger seams and straighter stitches every time.

04
Finishing

Every blanket is cleaned and inspected for quality and warmth before it goes out.

05
Giving back

Finished blankets go directly to people experiencing homelessness or hardship.
